Hiring Manager Interview Checklist

Here is a list that will ensure you conduct high quality interviews and have a success result for both you and your team, and for the candidate.

Start with the end in mind: When do you want this role to commence and work backwards.

  • Who is conducting the interview(s) process and check diaries – include time to debrief post interview.
  • Brief HR / recruitment team on the timings of the process.
  • Book a room for the interview and add to meeting schedule. If you are using tech or flip charts during for a presentation, book these in advance.
  • Clarify roles in the interview. What are you looking to get – knowledge, presentation expertise, key skills.
  • Update the agency/HR on the format of the interview including a presentation brief if required.
  • Ensure candidates are fully briefed on the interview process.
  • Review all the CVs in-depth. In addition, remind yourself of notes made by recruitment consultant/HR.
  • Decide what questions to ask. Include rapport-building questions. Also delegate who will ask what questions. Agree ‘must-have’ versus ‘nice to have skills’.
  • Ensure you agree on a scoring system related to the key competencies you are validating and communicate this to colleagues.
  • After the interview, review the results of the scoring system and the interviewer’s
  • Make a decision on feedback, successful and unsuccessful, and agree what feedback candidates will be given.
  • Do we have another role? It is not uncommon to have more than one ideal candidate for the position. In a skills short market do you have another opportunity in your organisation they can fill?
  • Decide what offer will be made to the successful candidate if this is a final interview and who will make it.
  • Communicate your decisions agents/HR and agree who will give feedback to unsuccessful candidates and the successful candidate.
  • Debrief with your agent/HR about the recruiting process. What worked well? What could have been better? What will happen next time?
